My jaw dropped when I read another question and someone said they had never met an atheist in real life.

So how about you? Who here has NEVER met an atheist? (No, Y!A doesn't count as 'meeting').

Any background details (but not so they violate any Yahoo rules) appreciated. Thank you.

I'm sure I have, but since it isn't something that comes up in my conversations with others, I have no idea who, among my circle of friends, is an atheist...or a Christian...or a Buddhist...or, well, you get the idea.

My Grandmother was Atheist, my dad was atheist, my mom was in and out of religion/atheism....
But I've never met anyone specifically that offered the information they didn't believe in God....well, except once, when I said something about my beliefs and he basically agreed, I guess that's the only other professed atheist I've come across.
I have an agnostic friend and my other friends believe in a "god" but not religion specific.
And another one of my friends is a fundamentalist Christian.
Most people in polite society feel oppressed enough not to bring it up.
Chances are, we meet many,
they just don't profess it like Christians do.

God for bid!
'
If I told everyone I've met who professed to me they were "christian" and that "jesus loves you" and whatever else,
If I stated:
Well, I'm an atheist! and shrugged my shoulders,
we KNOW that a small scale battle would ensue and we just don't want to deal with it!

That's why we are here, obviously!

The person didn't live in the UK then- 95% of people here are atheists. Seriously I've never met a Christian fundamentalist and I never want to meet one either.

Plenty of Atheist in Germany who do not wish to pay compulsory Church Taxes out of their salary.

Plenty of Catholics in Germany too.

The ones I dislike the most are those people who are Anti - it is fine being an Atheist - it is fine being religious, but to my way of thinking it is not fine to be anti.

This means something else. Live and let live is a good motto.

Actually the default position is an agnostic. An atheist has positively concluded that there is no God etc. But many refer to all non believers as atheists.

I've never met a true atheist, but I've met people who claim to be then you hear them says something like "Thank God! I didn't just fall and bust my face." If they were an atheist they wouldn't be thanking God. There all normally young adults or teens also.
