We mailed our applications on January 31 after completing and printing on-line form accompanied with all necessary documents. We are leaving on May 7. Is there a chance of getting passports in time?

Yes, it is possible. According to Passport Canada, it is taking about 9 weeks. The biggest problem is people are sending in their passports with missing info...and that is prolonging the process for them. (A Service Canada receiving office can check through it all for you)

Passport Canada is experiencing a sharp volume increase in passport applications in all of its offices, by mail and through its receiving agents. Due to this increase in volume, it may take up to 45 business days (9 weeks) before you receive your new passport.

Best advice to anybody about to apply for a passport is to fill the application online then take their copy to the passport office. Your wait at the passport office is fraction of the time than that of someone who hand-wrote their application. I was in and out of the passport office in 15 minutes (in Brampton). My longest wait was in the prescreening to make sure my paperwork was in order (10 minutes). I then received my passport in 2 1/2 weeks from the point I left the passport office. Mailing in passports the wait time to receive one is up to 60 days.

Also if you handwrite your application and are planning to go to the passport office to hand it in. Prepare a lunch! There are signs up saying that "Even if you receive a number you may not be garanteed to be served" People who apply online get bumped ahead of you!

I would say yes, they have hired many new employees to help with the recent flood of applicants. Everyone knew this deadline was coming thanks to the US homeland security insisting on it. I guess it is human nature to leave things to the last minute like shopping on New years Eve.
If you still don`t have the passports by April I would visit a passport office and pay the extra money to speed up the processing time so your trip is not ruined.

You should be all right. When my passport was later in coming than I thought it should be I contacted my federal MP and with his help it arrived before I had to leave.

Check the website, I think they were forecasting a 2 month waiting period last time I looked.

I don't, but I would call the Consular Office or walk there (there should be one relatively nearby to where you live) and ask.
