If you are earning money, it doesn't matter what age, taxes will apply to your earnings whether thru a job or self employment.

The need to file a return depends on the total income for the year, as Judy said, and whether there was federal taxes withheld. If you had taxes withheld but your income is below the filing requirements, you would want to file to get a refund of the Federal Tax withheld from your paycheck

It doesn't matter whether you're a student or not - a person has to pay taxes if they make a certain amount. For a single person, it's $8450 if you're not a dependent of someone else, $5150 if you are. If you have $400 or over from self-employment, then you have to file a return.
