I have gained a lot of weight during the last year, because I ate much and stopped exercising. Anyway, I want to lose it now. I went to the gym, and did some exercise that would be fairly easy for me last year, but with the extra weight I almost fainted (I had the technique to do the exercises, but I was panting, I can't run for more than 3-4 mins, I was in severe pain in the night afterwards, etc). What do you think, should i exercise right now or lose some weight first just by means of a diet, and then start exercise? I know exercise would help me burn the fat, but it was really a bad experience last time I tried. And what type of diet would you recommend? I don't want a chemical diet, with no carbs, like Atkins, but is there something that doesn't rely solely on small portions of food and low calories?

My daughter recently lost some weight, and she did it by moderate to begin with excercise, and worked up to a full on workout. She drank lots of water, cut out all soft drinks (even sugar free are bad for you because the carbonation robs your body of oxygen.) She ate only whole grain breads, and lots of vegetables and fruits as well as eating meat and cheesese and yogurt. She also reduced her sugar intake to only a bit on the weekend, and sometimes if they were having a treat she'd have just a bit of that. She never starved herself, she had healthy snacks and allowed herself to have as many vegis as she could eat.
Don't kill yourself excercising to begin with, 5 minutes is sufficient if you aren't in good shape, just add more time each week.
Good luck.

Loosing weight is a common practice in the U.S. ...but don't loose weight TOO FAST. Loosing weight at 10 pounds per week is unhealthy and may create health problems (ie. your body may feel dizzier/sleepier/etc.). I suggest working out a plan and a daily health log.

Example.

Suppose you are _ _ _ pounds. You would like to loose weight, but don't know how to begin.

Here's how: record your weight everyday.
- Eat healthier foods (especially cooking at home helps A LOT, since you can control and know what stuff - like oils - is being added in there).

- Walk instead of run (it may seem to take forever, but tell yourself. This is a way to loose weight steadily and not gain weight right after you've dieted!)

- Cut calories, not nutrition. It is important that you go on a healthy diet. Lacking nutrition may cause your body to weaken, dehydrate, etc.

first of all, you need to slow down, it took you some time to put on the weight and it's going to take time to get it off! you should start with walking, then increase the difficulty of your workout when your body can handle it. you'll never stick to it if you are doing things your body physically can't do yet. As for diet, keep it simple, eat healthy (lean meats, fruits and veggies, and whole grains) allow yourself some room for treats so you don't binge. And drink lots of water. Also I find it really helpful to keep a food journal or have a diet buddy so i have someone/something to be accountable to. good luck.

Walking 20 to 30 minutes a day will help you. But you have to walk where you are sweating. Talk to your doctor, he or she can recommend what diet would be best for you. A few foods that help burn calories or jump start your metabolism in the a.m. plain oatmeal or grapefruit. Celery is an excellent snack as you burn more calories digesting it. But always consult your doctor first.
