There are currently no great heroes in the world capable of perfect glory or at least none that I have heard of. Who among us will try? Christians believe that a man named Jesus managed to succeed at attaining this "perfect man" status. I don't know if what they say is true about him being the Son of God or not but I have a hard time coming up with another historical example who was better than him. In terms of sheer force of character, he is still numero uno. Political merits notwithstanding.

Am I the only one left trying to fill the empty spot? The role that noone wants? If so, that's bad, because I'm a real loser. I don't stand a chance.

the use of the word "thrown" is deliberate by the way.

WOOOOOOOOW!

To you, hero=dictator

If that is the general consensus, then you are even more cowardly and pathetic than I am. Really sad, thanks be to science that you are a minority.

Your imaginations are smaller than the most priggish theist fundy. I am just not impressed by these answers.

Why do you think mankind needs some kind of superhuman hero? Snap out of it. It's easy to create such a story, legend, or myth (Superman comes to mind). But please don't begin to think such stories are actually true. And even with respect to the story of Jesus - he didn't cure everyone or remove all misery, so even this hero was not perfect.

Heroes are all around us, but none of them are perfect. My parents are both heroes. The cops and firefighters in the WTC on 9/11 were all heroes. We humans are inconsistent, often irrational, and imperfect in so many ways. And yet we are capable of great accomplishments, kindness, and beauty. Why isn't that enough for us? - we don't need delusions of something even greater.

Many have tried to take the "thrown." More recently, people like Jim Jones, David Koresh, Reverend Sun Myung Moon, etc. have tried to take those that would be led through religious fervor. All these leaders suggest they are the annointed, and they have their followers.

Atheists do indeed understand that some humans are very susceptible to this kind of "leading." Atheists understand that many will try to take the "thrown". Most atheists will have nothing to do with such charlatans.

Who needs a god to lord it over us. We can look to the hero inside ourselves.

Anyway if it is the case that you only want a god as a hero. And you now accept his non-existence, well just choose from the mighty array of gods avaliable.

Besides the greatest of all the religious figures in religions, I think is Buddha. Just an ordinary man who showed just how to become free.

If you want someone to hold absolute power over everyone else, you're either a Nazi or in favor of a dictatorship. Why do you want your life to be run by someone else? Try living on your own for a change. It's not that difficult.

Do we really need someone to fill in the space? Why can't we all live our lives the best way we can without having to believe in something greater that watches over us and protect us? We have to start thinking for ourselves. Drop religion!

Buddhism has been around 500 years longer than Christianity, and it doesn't have a history of violence that Chrisitanity has. I think Buddha would be prouder of his religion than Jesus would be of his.
