My catfish bait of choice is chicken livers that I tie onto the hook after I wrap them in cheesecloth. I do this because they easily come off the hook during casting, and the cheesecloth allows the bait odors to enter the water. For large catfish I use sunfish, or minnows about 3 to 4 inches long that I smash and cut open with a knife before I throw them in. I do this to release oil and odors in the water for the catfish to smell. Nightcrawlers have been successful as well as stinkbaits, large snails and mussels taken out of the shell, and chicken hearts. Remember catfish rely on their sense of smell mostly to find food. Treble hooks work good for stinkbaits and livers, regular style hooks for mussels, snails, hearts. I use wide gap hook when I use larger sunfish and minnows going for large catties. Hook size depends on size of bait . Good Luck.

This is what I use.
Get the following:
1. A few jars of stink bait.
2. A bottle of garlic salt.
3. A bag of flower.
4. A small bottle of Cinnamon.
5. Two rubber gloves.
6. A large bowl.
First put on the rubber gloves and get all the stink bait out of the jars, start mixing in the flower to the point where it gets to the consistency of dough. Add garlic salt and a little bit of Cinnamon. Start making small balls about the size of marbles.
Get some small treble hooks and when you go out to the lake, you should be able to catch a whole bunch of catfish.

Chicken liver and cheese cloth just like Mark said. Catfish have an overbite, so you might try using a floater to keep it just off the bottom a few inches. Makes it a lot easier for them to take the bait.

Night-crawlers generally work the best for catfish. Stick to some sort of organic bait that smells at the very least.

Smelt,Shad,Shrimp, and craw fish are some that I've had great luck with.I like Smelt best ; you can get it at Meijers,Wall Mart etc..just cut some (4 or 5)into small corn sized pieces and chum it into the water at your casting range then put a whole smelt on a Circle Hook (they work best I've found because you don't have to SET the hook, they set themselves) sit back and have fun.GOOD LUCK and KEEP FISHING!!!!!!!!!!!

chicken blood, liver, stink bait, dead shad, live bait, you can catch a catfish on almost anything, the more it smells the more fish you will catch and bigger, cats use there sense of smell as their main food finding technique
