i am using windows xp. my ram is 256mb. but available is only 36 mb

do you mean on your hard drive. Maybe you should upgrade your hard drive and/or ram. Ram and hard drives arn't that expensive. I would upgrade to another stick of 256 to give you a total of 512. Make sure you are matching the same ram types.

Maybe try something like MemTurbo to free up physical RAM. But 256Mb is way underspecced for XP, I'm afraid.

You may have a video card that uses regular RAM off your system. Install more RAM.

Is your pc slow? Often pcs run on minimum hardware necassary in order to save power.
