The day before yesterday our Border Collie was spayed. I picked her up yesterday morning, brought her home, and made her rest all day long yesterday. How long should we wait before we start running and working her again? She's about to go stir crazy out there, but I don't want her stiches to pull out or anything. What should we do?

I thank you all for you input. So far aminal_lover and Vet01 have been on track with quality answers. And for future reference, I know that my SHOULD have given me this information, but he did not. If he had, I wouldn't be here asking you all. Therefore, if your answer is going to be "call your vet" or "read the paper that your vet gave you" or "do what the vet told you", then don't bother answering. THANKS!!!

The vet should have sent her home with discharge instructions but if not here are the discharge instructions that we give after a spay at our clinic:

Avoid extreme changes in temperature

Call the vet if she does not eat

Restrict activity for at least 7 days (this means lease walks and no running up and down stairs as this can cause the incision to open up)

Check the incision several times a day for swelling, redness, dranage or signs of pain.

Keep her from licking the incision as much as possible.

Extra care should be taken if she does have external stitches--The clinic i work for does not use external stitching for spays---there are 2 layers of skin in the abdomen we stitch the first layer with absorbable stitching (they are absorbed as the incision heals) and then the external layer is glued shut.

I hope that this helps--feel free to e mail me if you need to.

Leash exercise only until the stitches are out. It's fine if your dog goes on walks, goes up and down stairs and jumps on the couch. No letting her rough house and play with another dog until the stitches are out, the same with bathing. Just use common sense and she will be fine. The only stitches I've ever seen come out ot incision open was from the dog licking, not from over doing. When they over do, they can get a serum pocket, which means the body fills the area with fluid to protect it and that usually needs to be extracted. I hope this answers your question.

Border Collies are very durable dogs, seeing that they are a working breed. It has been three days and if she is feeling back to normal allow her to do her normal routine. Just watch her with her sutures. The only way they will usually come out is if she removes them by mouth( biting or licking). If you see her licking the area excessively, put Preparation on the suture area. the shark oils in the Preparation H will speed up the healing process and she will detour her from licking the area.

Wait until the stitches are out and the dog is on no pain medication. Also, walk the dog on a leash before you turn him/her loose for the first time to play. It is usually a good 2 weeks to be safe.

You need to keep her quiet until her stitches come out. You also can't let her run loose because you need to keep them dry. If she's feeling good, it wouldn't hurt to take her for a walk on a leash, though to keep her rom going stir crazy.

Your dog will let you know when she is ready to get up and go, but be gentle-( yes it is important to worry that she has stitches will pull out) but you cant make her lay all the time or her healing process will take longer.

well i think you should let the dog be the judge of that when you see your dog walking around and trying to play that's how you would know i don't think that any dog wants to be pushed around when they are really in pain if you just got stitches would you want somebody pushing you around or making you do things i don't so so take it from a future veterinarian.
