You are right. The emperor Constantine made himeself the first Pope. The pagan emperors before him were busy destroying off the nobles in the Roman territories because they were converting in mass quantities to christianity. Strange thing everytime they rounded up a christian for the spectacle with lions in the Coliseum, some ten more romans would convert to christianity. Constantine was able to unite pagan Rome by validating Christianity and thinking to change God's law and times. And thus Rome went from pagan Rome 300 a.d. to be called the Holy Roman Empire, and has been in operating ever since with a minor bump by Napoleans General Berthier in 1798 that sent the pope into exile. Given his mortal wound see Rev 13 and recovered by the re-statement of the Dictator Mussolini in WWII.
The Popes have been responsible for issuing the condemnations of complete races and religions throughout histories some estimates have their atrocities of murders during the crusades and inquisitions in the hundreds of millions.
Before this:
Nero had his henchman secretly burn Rome, and he blamed this on the christians. Nero desired to be worshipped. Christians were state "terrorists" sound familiar?
The pope also has millions that worship him. This goes against the first and second commandments in the bible. Christians worship Christ and do God's TEN COMMANDMENTS as JESUS did.
The the first pope Constantine thought to change God's commandments and times, and is more appropraitely referred to as the Beast in the bible.

The Pope is the leader of the Catholic Church. He is not just a holdover from the days of the Roman emperor days. If you would look into it, you would find that the Pope is meant to be a figurative descendant of the apostles, specifically Peter, who first led the Church after the death and Ascension of Christ.
PS. Pope John Paul the second was the best thing that had happpened to the world in ages. I for one am sorry he died. And many other Christians and Catholics are as well. I hope Pope Benedict the Sixteenth does half as well as Pope JP II did!

Historically, the pope "is not the CEO of the church or the master of ceremonies of Catholic rituals," says the Rev. Richard John Neuhaus, editor of the religion journal First Things.
"His central job, the most important one, is to be a force for unity in the church as the head of the College of Bishops,"
Naming bishops
Approving policies and theological documents, from discussions about liturgy to decisions on Vatican foreign policy.
Resolving disputes within the Vatican or among bishops.

Yes, I think his position should be abolished. I wouldn't kiss his ring if I were paid a million dollars. They call him the "Holy Father". I thought I read where "no one is to call someone father but THE FATHER". Also, no one is Holy just because of some secret vote at the vatican. The pope is a MAN. He is no different than any of us here on Yahoo.

The Pope is there to serve. If you don't want to follow the teaching of Catholicism you can choose between a variety of other christian creeds. If you already do, it is nothing of your business to abolish anything in somebody's else religion.

The Pope is a hold over from Jesus Christ setting Simon Peter (the Rock) in charge of His Church.
John 21:15-17 states:
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, "Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Feed my lambs."
He then said to him a second time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" He said to him, "Yes, Lord, you know that I love you." He said to him, "Tend my sheep."
He said to him the third time, "Simon, son of John, do you love me?" Peter was distressed that he had said to him a third time, "Do you love me?" and he said to him, "Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you." (Jesus) said to him, "Feed my sheep.
Matthew 16:17-19 states:
Jesus said to him in reply, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven."
The Catholic Church believes the Lord made Simon alone, whom he named Peter, the "rock" of his Church. He gave him the keys of his Church and instituted him shepherd of the whole flock.
The Pope is the senior pastor of 1.1 billion Catholics, the direct successor of Simon Peter.
The Pope’s main roles include teaching, sanctifying, and governing.
With love in Christ.
