If you want to get involved in the global economy, you should perhaps think of chinese.
Otherwise, I would suggest Spanish. for the following reasons:
1. It is spoken by more countries than any other language in the world
2. It is spoken by almost all countries of Central and South America (except Brazil)
3. A couple, at least, of the South American countries will likely soon become quite strong economic forces
4. If you are an American, you would already deal with a lot of Spanish speaking people in your own country
5. It is a relatively easy language to learn (you still can't do it well without a lot of work though)
6. While learning it, you could practice with a lot of people in America - because a language cannot be learned only in class: you have to have people to practice on.

do not choose chinese beacuse it is very difficult to learn and it will take many years and you still will not know enough to have a decent conversation with people

choose french or german ..or stick with one of the indian languages like gujarati :)
