Hitting an animal sends it the wrong message. It sends it fear and could make them mean or scared of you and you don't want your dog to fear your hand. Which is why your not suppose to hit them

Good ways to punish them for doing something bad is:

1) never yell or raise your voice. If your dog is doing something wrong and you say "no" in a stern voice and it doesn't stop, it's because it doesn't want to, not because it can't hear you. All you are doing is hurting their sensitive ear drums

2) try putting in a "time out." Yes, a time out like a child but don't put them in a crate if you have one. Crates shouldn't be a bad place to go. Put them in the bathroom or in a play pen.

3) you can use a water bottle to squirt them if they are doing something bad. It won't hurt them and it will send the message without making you look like the bad guy (or your hand)

4) If it's chewing up something it isn't suppose to, put something they are allowed to chew on in place of that.

Hope that helps

This is something breeders forget to (or purposely forget to in order to make money) post on their sites and they should...

PLEASE DO NOT BUY A CHIHUAHUA FOR A YOUNG CHILD!
Because of their tiny size, Chihuahuas are fragile and many breeders think that children should be at least 8 to 10 years old before having a Chihuahua in the home. "Without meaning to, some children can play too rough or toddlers could step on or fall on a Chihuahua resulting in injuries or even death.
Its common sense really. Imagine the sick and depressive feeling of dropping your chihuahua and it convulsing and\or dying right there in the floor? And if it survives, imagine the costs of injuries? Poor little dog. It would haunt you forever.

Taken from a little Chihuahua's point of view...
Please don't hit me. I can't hit back,
but I can bite & scratch and I really don't want to do that. Before you scold me for being uncooperative, obstinate, or lazy, ask yourself if something might be bothering me.
Perhaps I'm not getting the right foods or I've been out in the
sun too long or my heart is getting old and weak. Be aware that however you treat me, I'll never forget...

Below is a good link I like about chihuahuas. Hope I was able to help!

Did you grow up in a household that hits? I did not! you discipline with a sharp NO. Bad doggie but you never hit a dog especially a very small dog that could break a bone. It is common sense

For one they WONT listen to it they need patience and gentle disapline or you'll see how stubbern they can be. Also it brings out the aggressiveness in the breed and later in life they might bite associating a hand with something that hurts and is bad. you want the dog to listen to you because they want too not because they don't want to be physically hurt.

because you could break one of their bones . I have a chihuahua and we use a water bottle for disipline the kind you spray and that gets his attention really well . Hope this works for you .

Because they're fragile? If you hit them, they fly apart into a thousand little pieces of canine.

Don't hit any animal! It's abuse and you'll be teaching it to be scared of you. You don't want to get hit, do you?
