He's a cult leader. He told everyone that this morning would be the first day of the end of the world, and gave people the option of either drinking the proverbial Kool-Aid and going to Heaven right away or seeing the end of the world. About half of the people chose suicide, and now he realizes he was wrong and kills himself to avoid the consequences.

This needs a little more explanation as to why this is a "tough one?" I hope this is not a reality because it sounds more like a dream or fictional short story. One must examine all aspects of this...What is the significance to the location: in an auditorium with people lying on cots...emotionally; looking proudly at everyone...stepping outside to a beautiful, poetically perfect day...and feeling confused/distraught...rushing back to his desk which doesn't make sense, because we just left him in the auditorium. Seems like he is at war or some kind of conflict which he has not been able to resolve or does not see any kind of resolution...yet is no excuse for suicide...there is always someone to reach out to...whether it be a partner, friend, family member, therapist, counselor, etc...even a stranger, there is always someone who we can relate to and find some level of listening, understanding and empathy. It's sad that he felt no other option but to kill himself...that is not the long term solution to a temporary problem...

The glorious morning caused him to do that, because you
said "It is a glorious morning, with the sun shining, and the
birds singing. SEEING THIS MAKES HIM VERY
DISTRAUGHT, and he rushes back inside to his desk,"
Am i right?

He was sick....has a terminal illness!....or he was depressed because he was homeless!
Why was he sleeping in an auditorium on cots with people all around?.....hmmmm! I think this is the clue to the riddle but I don't know the reason...
or i guess WHAT....caused him to do this!
