These are dogs that are considered hypoallergenic dogs:

Single-coated breeds which dont shed as much as the multi coat breeds. Some of those are---

* Afghan Hound
* Australian Terrier
* Basenji
* Bedlington Terrier
* Bichon (all types)
* Bichon Frisé
* Bolognese (dog)
* Border Terrier)
* Bouvier des Flandres
* Cairn terrier (may or may not be hypoallergenic- do more research before adopting one)
* Chinese Crested (hairless)
* Coton de Tulear
* German Shorthaired Pointer
* Greyhound
* Havanese
* Irish Water Spaniel
* Italian Greyhound
* Kerry Blue Terrier
* Lowchen
* Lhasa Apso
* Maltese
* Poodles (all sizes)
* Poodle hybrids
* Portuguese Water Dog
* Schipperke
* Schnauzer (all sizes)
* Shih Tzu
* Silky Terrier
* Soft-Coated Wheaten Terrier
* Spanish Water Dog
* Wheaton Terrier

Hairless breeds-these dogs have little to no fur on their bodies--personally i think that the mexican hairless are just adorable.

* American Hairless Terrier
* Chinese Crested (hairless)
* Mexican Hairless Dog (Xoloitzcuintli)
* Peruvian Hairless Dog

hope this helps some--there are lots of options for dogs that allow a wider selection for those with allergies or those of us who don't like vacuuming fur off of our carpet every 2 hours.

All dog shed, other than the hairless varities, they do shed there skin badly enough so its just as bad as the hair (most have a fuzz to them anyway) but as stated before in other posts, the hair isn't the problem. You need to realize, that dogs that don't shed have to get rid of their growing hair somehow! There is no way to stop completely. These dogs will have to be taken to a groomer at least once a month to look nice, or you can buy your own clippers and learn to do it yourself. There are many low shedding dogs out there (Schnauzers, Poodles, Bichons, Portugese Water Dogs, Lhasa Apsos, Shih Tzus, Maltese, etc.), but they aren't always good for allergy sufferers. You really need to spend some time researching the right breed for your family and then spend some more time with potential dogs of the breed(s) you're interested in. AKC dot org has a list of breeds, breed clubs and lots of good information on breed characteristics. After looking there I would suggest searching on PetFinder dot com for a rescue nearby. Now, there are dogs who are more hypoallergenic than others. A person with allergies to dander can still be allergic to a West Highland White Terrier, for instance, who doesn't shed much hair. In fact, there are several breeds, like Westies, that shed so minimally they're called "non-shedding." This means that they don't shed their undercoats when seasons change like other breeds, but they will still lose a small amount of hair just like people do. A person with dog allergies should first test their tolerance before making a commitment to own any breed. I don't know very many (if at all) medium sized breeds to be claiming they are hypo allergenic or low shedding, but try taking the test below to see which breed would be suggested to be right for you.

You need to look for a breed with no undercoat. Most dogs have 2 coats, but some dogs don't have an undercoat. Yorkshire Terriers are small and they have no undercoat. Down side is they are smaller than what it sounds like you are looking for and need to be taken to a groomers every month or so. Boston terriers are also a good breed, they are more medium sized and alot of them don't bark!! We raise Boston's and they are a WONDERFUL breed. Any dog will do as long as it is bathed regularly, fed properly and taken to the vet as necessary.

Poodles dont shed but need alot of upkeep.They can be very loyal and are usually very smart.My mom had one for 8 years and she was one of the best dogs.Also cockapoo's are great.They need the same upkeep as a poodle but get alot of traits from them to.Here is a site that might help.its got a question about shedding and size.Also if your looking for a shelter dog here are some links to.

Schnauzers are fantastic dogs, don't shed because they have fur instead of hair, train easily, fun to cut their fur into different things, like pants, or giving the males a mustache. My next pet will be a Schnauzer.

I would say a Yorkie because they don't shed, but you are asking for a med. sized dog so I would say a poodle because they don't have fur, they have hair.

Good luck choosing a dog!

A Maltese and a Bijon [spelling] are two that I know of. I think miniature poodles also don't shed.
