My stepmom told me that lining your nostrils with vaseline when you're on a long plane ride will ensure that you don't get sick. Is this true, and is it safe?

I don't mean with getting "airsick", I mean will it help you not catch a cold or the flu or something?

I want to know if it will help keep the germs out, I don't care if it helps airsickness or not.

I was a flight attendant for a number of years, and never heard about this one. I don't think that Vaseline is going to keep germs out. It's better to take vitamins, or zinc to keep from getting sick.
I don't think it will harm you if you want to give it a try. But I really don't think that's going to keep you from getting a cold or flu or whatever. Wash your hands alot, and if you're really concerned, wear a mask while on the plane. I've seen lots of Asians do that, so they don't get sick.
Good luck!

No. This is an old wives tale. You cannot keep the germs out. Also, some exposure to germs is good for your immune system. You need to exercise your immune system like you need to exercise your muscles otherwise the won't work as well.

The only thing Vaseline will do is prevent your nose from getting dry skin during the flight. That's all. Sorry mom!

No, not true. You can take sea sickness tablet, 2 hours before journey. Or, traditional way, suck a small pc of ginger, that helps. Not enough rest before a journey also aggravates the sickness. Wear loose clothings, cotton is good, comfy shoes, drink lots of water during inflight and avoid alcohol.

May want to explore if the Vaseline will get into your lungs that way and cause long term harm.
