No, you don't have to pay today! In fact, if you can't pay by April 15th, you can even request a payment plan with your tax return. Just include Form 9465 with your return. You can propose a monthly payment plan and if your debt is under $20K and the payoff is made within 48 months, they are likely to accept it. Penalties and interest will apply. As far as H&R goes, they can charge from $95 to several hundred dollars depending on the return. If you are elderly or low income, the VITA service offers free tax preparation. Ask your local librarian if they know if VITA volunteers are helping in your area. Good Luck!

When you file your taxes and you find that you owe, but are unable to pay, the tax service will be able to set you a payment plan with the IRS. I don't know about Block, but Jackson Hewitt will prepare your taxes without obligation, and if you don't like the price you can just walk. You will be responsible for the fees of preparation. Or, you can try IRS Free File. www.irs.gov.
Many people file extensions when they know they have tax-liability and that is not what an extension is for.
If you don't have a dime, file anyway and the IRS will be in touch.
good luck

When you owe extra tax on your return, you have until April 15th to pay it, regardless of when you file your return. If you are mailing, it is better to just mail it later, less chance of the IRS not matching the check to the return. If filing electronically, you can mail your check in before the due date and incur no penalties.
H&R Block fees are too high. You are better off getting software like Turbo Tax, which is very easy to use, even for beginners. If you have simple income, the basic version can be bought for about $20. I highly recommend it.

No, you'll have to mail the payment to the IRS by April 17.
Their fees vary by location and by how complicated your return is - from under $100 to several hundred.
