Most geniuses do not understand why they are special. Isaac Newton just thought he was more inquisitive or luckier than others by "finding" different things than others, like better shells on the seashore.

I think Isaac Newton would have certainly been an atheist if he had lived in modern times. In his time, God was still a viable proposition.

He just thought he was like everyone else and he figured there was a whole wealth of knowledge laid out before him; a sea of knowledge.
