"Old age home" is pretty vague terminology. You could be talking about nursing homes, convalescent hospitals, retirement communities, assisted living, or any number of other arrangements. Each exists to fill a need in today's society.

Not all people have children. Not all people with children WANT to have their children care for them in their elder years. Not all adult children with elderly parents can or want to provide full-time living arrangements for the parent(s). Elders with moderate to severe medical problems may need more specialized care than what a family member can offer.

There are too many variables too look at this from one narrow viewpoint. I don't consider my parents a burden, but I highly doubt they will consent to living with me if the situation ever arose; they are far too independent. An assisted living community would probably suit their needs better. But every family is different, therefore there are different options available to hopefully fill everyone's needs.

I already told my children DO NOT and I mean it take me into your house or keep me in my house with a companion or a nurse when I get too sick to take care of myself. Put me into a home. I will not be a burden to my family. I worked as a nurse in a few convalescent homes and I saw first hand how the patients made their children feel so guilty for putting them into a home. Those are very selfish parents. The children have a right to there own lives.

Why do you say old parents are not a burden on their children?

And old age homes can be used for couples to retire at and have conveniences more easily accessible. Some of the homes drive senior citizens to pick up meds, go shopping, etc.

We took care of my Dad as long as we could - we had to let him go to the old folks home because he suffered from Alzheimers - it was unsafe - and he was a burden....

I agree that many families are too quick to put their loved ones in old age homes, however, caring for the elderly - especially if they have serious medical problems - can be a full time job or more. People need to work to support their families and cannot give their elderly relatives the care they require alone. I'm glad the reputable nursing homes are still in business, because there would be far more neglected elderly in this country without them.

Not all the elderly people that are in nursing homes are there because they are a burden. Simply because some become sick or ill and need constant care that some family members can't supply.
I have a friend who has a father in a home but by his own choice.

old age homes are for people who are really sick and need lots of care. So the average old parent is not a burden but one who had a stroke and can't go the bathroom or as dementia and needs to be watched 24hrs a day is

well, some elderly people may not have children to take care of them or anyone else in that matter. also, if they do have kids, the kids may not feel burdened, but bad because they have no time or money to care for their parents.

There are old people out there who are too sick to be taken care any other way. Then there are those the family doesn't want to have to deal with and they just put them there for convenience.I've worked there , I know. been there done that.

nursing homes provide long term medical care for the elderly and disabled because hospitals who deal with emergency and short term care are not equipped to do so.
