Gran Canaria is part of Spain, and Spain is particularly fussy about passports. Several people I know have been refused entry for having less than 6 months left to run on their passport, so I wouldn't take the chance if I were you.

Normally it is 6 months that you need clear to travel with your passport. You can get refused entry in certain countries (i,e America)
Better to get a new passport now to save anguish and worry later, after all you're gonna need it in the future so why wait?

Although you would probably be OK to get out of and back into the U.K. if you are finally back before the expiry date of your passport, it would still be prudent to apply for a new one well before you go. The reason for this is that, because of identity fraud, the Passport Office have grossly tightened up on checking that applicants for passports are who they say they are, and in some cases people expecting to get their new passport in a week or two find they have to wait very many weeks before checks on them have been satisfied

I don't know if it is a legal requirement (it would be for the USA for example as you have to have a certain number of months left before expiry) but if it was me I would get new ones just to be on the safe side.

It could never hurt, you don't want to be stuck out there trying to get back and don't have a passport.
