The fact that you want to build your own woodburning grill tells me you are a serious enthusiast, as am I. Here is a link to my favorite grilling/BBQ website:
http://www.thesmokering.com/
The first time I found it, I spent hours exploring it and the links contained in it. It covers just about every facet of grilling/BBQ including constructing your own grill or pit. There is a reader forum where you can post questions or provide answers to other enthusiasts. The advice you will get is almost always excellent. One of the best things I like about this site is that they screen the links they provide very carefully. I use them all of the time and always learn something new.
I'm betting that this will become one of your favorite websites.
Good luck with all of your outdoor cooking!

i have one i designed myself. look at outdoor grills in a book at lowes or bookstore, pick out one and build it. you can use your own imagination. be sure your codes will let you. someplaces wont. put it on a concrete slab. approximately 2x4 or 5 ft. convenient heighth. part of the top solid for food and utinsels, and thew grill could be made of 1/2 in. stainless steel rods inserted in holes of a 1x1 angle. angles are embedded in mortar between bricks. embed other angles without holes underneath the stainless steel bars to accomodate a pan that will fit on them. space them app 4 in. apart below the rods. this is so you can adjust the fire at different heighths to raise or lower the heat. this is how i made mine experiment. and enjoy. this is only a rough idea of what i dtd. . on the side where the solid top is, you can build in a storage area. i made the solid top from the colored concrete squarepatio blocks. let the 2 ft sq. blocks help in deciding the size of the grill/ i know,, not much help. huh. oh build the concrete base whatever the width of the grill, and give yourself enough room to stand in front of it. i think my grill is app 2ft deep x 41/2 ft wide. maybe 5ft.

Along with stone, mud and animal parts, wood was one of the first materials worked by early humans. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. The development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.
