A man is lying dead in a field. He has with him an unopened package, and is grasping a straw. There is now sign of foul play and there are no footprints leading to him or away from him. If he opened the package it could have saved his life. What happened?

They Drew straws on the plane that was crashing for who would get the old parachute and he picked the short straw and the chute did not open.

There are two possibilities for this answer. (1) He died of thirsty, the straw showed that he wouldn't died if he had drink some water...etc. (2) He died out of jumping from high, the unopened package might be the item that he needed to use when he's jumping from high to the ground, but since it's unopen, therefore, he died.

He was originally swimming in a lake and using the straw to breathe like a snorkel and he swallowed all of the water and the package had a phone in it for him to call someone.

If he'd opened the package he would have found a parachute. He fell out of or jumped out of a plane.
