The similarity is atheism and religion is both are world views. Different in that atheism rejects a spiritual aspect, religion insists there is spiritual based guidance. Black and white.
As to atheist religion. Most atheists are secular humanists. No god, no prayer, scripture, no spirit involved, with many of the same moral philosophies of religion. There are religious exceptions, Buddhism is a full blown spiritual relgion with no god -- so some consider it an atheist religion.
As far as promoting religion in public spaces, any one version of god is no more valid than any other god. The only fair thing is no god at all. Why do you have a problem? Religion has chruches on every block in most American towns.
Keep religion out of civics. Look at the harm mixing religion and governance does to Islamic countries. Religion is not rooted in provable fact or even rational, rather it is primarily backed by emotional belief. So the religious are easily exploitable by governments and corrupt leaders throughout history by playing on followers emotions. Clearly separating religion from government is a preventative measure inserted by the founding fathers to protect freedoms and religions of all. How soon we forget the past.

Our beliefs are extremely varied, so you absolutely can't lump all atheists together in that way. The only thing we all have in common is that we do not believe in "gods". Some atheists even do follow religions (Buddhists and Satanists, for example).
And no, taking your religion off the public pedestal is just levelling the playing field for everyone else. It's not replacing it with our "god". For you to even think otherwise makes me doubt that you're a rational person. And it makes me see how closes-minded and intolerant you are.

A lack of a religion is not a religion.
Religious cannot comprehend a lack of religion, and thus assume that any "philosophical" viewpoint is a religious one. That's simply not true.
Religion implies belief in a higher power. Removing that higher power constitues a lack of religion. Science does not consider nature a higher power, but merely a physical thing to be understood which has no supernatural intelligence or ability.
Science does not pray to or worship nature or the process by which nature's secrets are discovered. Thus, it is not a religion.

I know that it's virtually impossible for a religious person to understand the LACK of a religion, or the lack of a belief in a God, because it's almost impossible for them to think in terms of anything BUT religion.

You need to get hold of your neighbors and find a few more functional brain cells. Atheists do not have "beliefs". They are asking for proof of god, not blind faith in a fantasy. We do not "insert" any religion, we are asking for proof. We do not have a "god". We do not want to "covert" anyone to anything. But we would like brain dead religious fanatics to stop shoving fantasies down our throats and telling us it is real.

Your belief that Atheists MUST worship SOME sort of higher power only exposes your ignorance in the fact that you can't think along any other mindset of there being some sort of higher power.
And yes, ANY god is more valid than the Christian God.

So by your logic, their is no way for someone to be non-religious. If believe in God, that's a religion, and if you don't believe in God, that's a religion too? I hope you realize that you're not making any sense. Question: I'm an agnostic, where does that place me?

You must not understand the definition of an atheist. An atheist is one who has no beliefs in god(s).
Religion is a belief in god(s). How can you assume that atheists have religion? You are not being rational.

You're either very ignorant or insane. Atheists don't have a god. Nor do they have a religion. Atheism isn't a religion. Atheists don't believe in god.

I disagree. Taking God out of the 'public square" should have no affect on you. You are free to worship whomever you wish as long as you don't force others to do the same.
