First try by cleaning the fuel delvery system. You should be able to by a good cleaner that you just add to your gas. Check all the belts and get an oil change. Check yu air filter too.

first service flame trap and inspect for broken vacuum hoses. next inspect where intake manifold mates to cyl. head for a cracked gasket [spray carb cleaner at and around sealing area while engine is at idle] if rpm's change you have a leak. if all shows good here move to ign componants and filters and replace as required if this does not take care of idle concerns have valve adjustment preformed at dealership [select fit shims are used] few independent shops stock these any more.

Yeah give it a good service oil, air, fuel filters. plugs and rotor arm and cap, hold back on the leads if there in good nick, see how you go on from there mate. try cleaning the throttle housing with some carb cleaner, if problem persist take it to your local Volvo dealer and ask them to check for dtc's,
Good luck!
