People respect you if they see that you respect yourself. Think highly of yourself, and people will see that and respect you more.

It depends on the people you are trying to get it from. Most of the time it really just takes time. Some people respect power or control, others look up to wealth, and still others may see success with family, career, or health as being respect worthy. Please yourself first, then look at who you need to respect you. I'm a new supervisor and am having a hard time gaining respect (buy-in) from my ex-peers, now direct reports. But, I know what needs to get done and I know who I need to get the respect from. It all takes time.

This is a personality/moral/self respect/dignity/values and self projection issue...people see it sometimes right away in a person on how he/she interacts to an individual. Some people needs to see the big picture first and that could take awhile to put together. It's who you are and how real your grasp on reality and how you deal w/ it. You cannot impose it, ask for it or expect it from anybody nor give it to somebody just voluntarily...It needs to be earned " by you and by him/her "...It's a two way relationship... If somebody comes up to you and tells you " I honestly have a great deal of respect for you"...that means he/she knows your legacy and what you're really about.

By being kind to others, be a good worker at your job, when asked for help give it, as long as it doesn't hurt your finances, health or way of life. Be your self, don't pretend to be some thing your not. Be a friend in deed, not a friend in need.
Be truthful, don't lie just to make your self look better in others eyes.
I believe you get the picture

Learn to feel good and respect yourself first. Then try listening to what others have to say, treat them nicely, but don't let them ever walk over you. Be firm with whatever decision you made, and accept responsibility for your actions.
