The B747-8 may be better in terms of economic, although I know that it is still a paper airplane now. But I know that they will use the GEnx engines like B787. It is projected to be lighter and more fuel efficient than the A380. Although it carries less passengers, but the cost per seat is projected to be less than A380. The B747-8 can fly to any international airports in the world without any upgrade of the airport, so it could fly point-by-point. But the A380 requires wider and longer runways and upgrade on its gate. So it is a more cost effect than B747-8. The freighter version of B747-8's weight will be 20% less than the A380F, although it has less range than A380F. But in terms of efficiency, many airlines still choose the B747-8F because of the ark opening of the front and the side doors that the A380F dont have. Thats why the B747-8F's order have much more orders than A380F. I know UPS just canceled their order because of the delays, but once A380 and the freighter version is on track, it will attract more orders. It depends on what kind of efficiency each airline need from aircraft to meet their expectation to order the aircrafts.

The 747 has a lot of years left in it's production run. The A380 will be seen more and more at the worlds airports in the future but it will never be the success that the 747 was. The first 747 was greatly anticipated because the flying public were tired of the cramped tubes that all airliners were in that day. The flying public has learned to appreciate wide body aircraft but is leery of getting on an aircraft like the A380 that might take an hour to load. We all know that all that extra space in the A380 will eventually be packed with seats because moving a bar, gift shop, fitness spa, or casino, across the Atlantic makes no economic sense. The A380 will never be built in the numbers now needed to secure a break even point let alone any profit. The plane will eventually be phased out and the governments of France and Germany will eat the loss just like they did after they spent 12 Billion to put 14 Concordes into service. The A350 will also be an also ran with the 787 beating it 10 to 1. On the purely aesthetic side, the A380 is kinda homely . The 747 seems more stately.

I like the 747, but even prior to the announcement of the A380, Boeing received less orders for bigger planes overall. This is why Boeing scraped the plan for 747-X and is focusing on 777 and 787. Though Airbus offers subsidized planes for a cheaper cost of ownership, there is considerable costs to consider that the A380 needs such as airport modifications, maintenance and fuel costs similar to any aircraft. It's too early to tell, but since the arrival of the 747 in the 1960's the trend has been to create more efficient planes and more flights than bigger planes overall.
My only valid argument against Airbus at this time is the logistics required to move components to various Airbus plants and the fact that they didn't create a functional prototype prior to actual production. Their prototype was their first production plane. Because they didn't work out bugs that could of been addressed earlier, Airbus took a heavy loss from delays and contract cancellations. Logistically, Airbus must transport some parts through towns and rivers where the clearance is by feet and inches. That would be a nightmare for me to handle.

I believe that the A380 will ride above the 747 for a while partly because the improvements with computer technology will make it more efficient and operating costs will be lower. But once this 748 comes out I believe it will give the A380 a fair amount of competition partly because the A380 is so big it cant operate normally in some airports so the 748 will be a better option. (honest unbias oninion, i prefer airbus)

No I dont considering most airports have to have costly upgrades even to fit the A380 in it, I dont think it will ever be cost effective, the 747 is just the stud of the airliners and it will be for a long time to come.

Given the rate of cancellations and the delays in production on the A380, not to mention the financial problems because of it, it's hard to see Airbus dominating over BA when it comes to Airliner sales and dominance. At least not in this decade. I'm rooting for the American team...go Boeing.

The 747 has had it's time, even the newer 747 won't stop Airbus...the A380 wins hands down and will now take over the title of 'Queen of the Skies'.

The A380 wins hand down. It is more efficient, bigger, cleaner, and cheaper (will just be a little later in deliveries though ;))
However, Boeing doesn't really care about this. Boeing thinks the future of air travel will be point-to-point and not a hub-spoke network. That is why they are building the 787 Dreamliner, a light, fast, efficient, medium ranged, medium sized aircraft.
