For example someone will ask something historical and someone will reply with a obviously copy & pasted answer, (I know because no one can type that fast and that much and yet still be at the top of the list). What is the point of this when you can just lead someone to the source? If you don't know the answer, you don't have to pretend to. It doesn't make you smart, and it's hell to scroll through when you're secretly yahoo answering it.

To humble s, i type with all 10 fingers too, but to produce a whole 3 page wikipedia piece is impossible in 1 minute.
And no it's not a good answer it's a cop out. Someone trying to be a smarty pants.
And with all these cut and paste jobs, they are usually inprecise and merely graze the topic mentioned, as they were not written with that person in mind.

And for Madam Yakkult down there i am not too lazy to google something myself. I am merely mentioning the people that are and ask simple questions like for example, Who is Elizabeth the 1st? A simple trip to google would suffice, or someone saying go to google etc etc. You don't bring the person the whole wikipedia entries on Elizabeth the 1st. The history part was merely a basis to set my example on.

And to the person formally known as humble you are quite the comic wit aren't you? You gave the most obvious reply to this question and i would like to give you a big clap.

Seriously!
Some dude pasted about a thousand words in reply to one of my questions - who needs that!
I can look up someone else' opinion just as easy as they can. I come here to here the opinions of the participants.

If copy/paste is an acceptable form of answer in the Religion and Spirituality section, I should get all the answers correct from now on. Ten points every time.
I'll just copy and paste the KJV into every answer. Within it is the answer to EVERY question under the sun having to do with religion and spirituality.
On the other hand, if you need to know how to change a thingamabob on a 1968 AMC Javelin with a 232 engine, then a copy/paste answer from a mechanic's online book may just fit the bill.

I don't hate it at all and I don't agree that it implies that one does not know the answer. I am an editor and very, very, very few people are gifted with the ability to write clearly, to the point, in an organized way. I'm not one of them. So if the answer has been presented in a clear way, why would anyone muddy the waters with an inarticulate anwer.
Second, some answers require that you give a quotation or a citation, unless, of course, you intend to plagiarize, which is illegal.

Surely it depends on the question, if you asked for something historical, then getting the correct information is wanted, otherwise you could have actually looked it up for yourself, couldn't you!?
Historical questions can be long and involved, and if someone knows the answer. accept it, whether its a cut and paste job or not. The reason they may be fast is because they know WHAT TO LOOK FOR!

Not necessarily. This forum does not lend itself to taking a lot of time to answer. If you want to do that, go to Usenet or somewhere like that. Copy and paste is a reasonable way to answer specific questions that you have ready answers for, on Y!A. What *does* annoy me though is when people paste stuff that they've obviously just nicked from elsewhere, have barely read, probably don't understand and cannot support themselves.

If what I con do is find an answer that puts things in a more succinct form than I can, then, cut and paste it is, otherwise I'll type what I believe to be as factual as needed

It does annoy me when they cut and paste, but give no reference, trying to pretend it is their own answer.
I would much rather people just gave a link if they don't actually have an answer of their own.
As for the fundies who cut and paste half the Bible ....

I really hate long run on questions.
When asking a question keep it simple and to the point. We don't want to read a book to find out if you should turn left on red or not.

Yes, i do. They are not personal. But if the information helps, then it's hard to complain about them. Sometimes, There are places i didn't even check and then they give an answer and it is what i was looking for.

Yes! I dislike copy /paste answers. If I wanted that kind of an answer I would look it up in my own library.
Now, if it's opinion I seek, you can't copy/ paste that.
I think that there are a few who have a few answers already copied and just look for places to hang them.
