3-- my kids never climbed out of thier cribs, so we just always waited until their 3rd birthday and then made a big deal, re-did their room and got them their "big-kid" beds. For us it worked out great---they loved their beds and never climbed out in the middle of the night etc.

I had to put my daughter in a big girl bed just before she turned 2. She was starting to climb out of the crib, and I was also bringing home my son from the hospital and we didn't have a second crib!
It was really difficult at first to make the transition. Actually we just put her straight into the bed in a new room. I spent the last two months of my son's pregnancy in the hospital so I couldn't gradually ease her into it.
After a few weeks, she was sleeping like a baby again. However, I'll wait a lot longer to move my son to a bed.

My daughter was 10 months. She had tried climbing out of her crib and the results were a trip to the ER. After that she didn't want to sleep in the crib any longer so I placed a twin mattress on the floor and she slept there. After awhile I got a bedframe and a rail.

Generally, when they are able to climb out and fall on their heads, so anywhere from around 9 months to 36 months, depending on the child.
We didn't use cribs after our first child, though. It mostly just sat there collecting folded laundry and baby toys, as she usually ended up in bed with us so I could nurse more comfortably. We never even bothered to set it up when our 2nd child arrived, and sold it before our 3rd was born. Babies 2 through 6 just slept in bed with us until they were ready to move in with a sibling, usually around age 2.

i think my daughter was 2 and it was a smooth transition, she wanted to sleep in her new bed and i never had a problem with her coming out at all (she's 3 and a bit now, and bedtime is not a problem, but i also allow her to have toys in bed so if she can't fall to sleep right away, which happens seldem, she can occupy herself with playing).
