Just a quick question how an m16 or m4 works.
OK so i know how where the mag release is and how to cock it where safty/fire mode is but what is that round button on the right hand side above the grip? People seem to smack it after they have ****** it. What does it do? Any pictures on internal workings? All M16 models seem to have it.
I dont own a M16 by the way or have i ever fired one, i'm just curious about firearms and how they work. Thanks.

Immediate action if the rifle fails to shoot. You don't have to do this everytime, just when the rifle malfunctions.

Slap (Slap upward on the magazine to ensure it is fully seated, and the magazine follower is not jammed).

Pull (Pull the charging handle fully to the rear and check the chamber).

Observe (Observe for the ejection of a live or expended cartridge).

Return (Release the charging handle, do not ride it forward).

Tap (Tap the forward assist assembly to ensure bolt closure).

Shoot (Attempt to fire).

The forward assist was incorpororated on the various models after the original M-16 designed by Stoner. The original M-16 used in Vietnam had many flaws including jamming and residue buildup in the firearm. The forward assist was developed in response to this problem. By using the forward assist it helps push the bolt completely forward toward the chamber. Before this incorporation soldiers found themselves defenseless with a weapon that could not fire. Supposedly 10,000 deaths were contributed by this simple problem in the Vietnam War. The M-16 is a complex machine with excelent service abilities including light weight, superior accurized placement of projectiles, and quality construction, but they are a pain to deal with. You have to know, understand, and treat them like a woman. You have to pamper it and spend quality time with it for it to be of good use. So if you do choose to buy one be sure it is at least an A-2 model. Stay away from the originals...

What they usually smack is the "Bolt release" which is on left side.It sends the bolt forward and chambers a round from a fresh magazine
Go to Bushmaster .com.They sell assault rifles and have pics and videos.

Exactly. The forward assist and it's "supposed" to seat the round. It's useless as far as I'm concerned.

That is the forward assist. It is tapped to fully seat the bolt to the chamber. In theory. It doesn't always work.

I think you are refering to the forward assist. It assures the round is properly chambered.
