Hi there...

I am not sure if you are asking because you have a dog that may have done this, or you have found puppies without their mom (mom, could have been hit by a car also), I did find some articles about this topic for you though, links will be below.

Hope this all helps!

One quote from site: There are times though when you may find a newborn puppy or kitten without its mother. There are also times when a mother refuses to feed or abandons her newborns. Under these conditions you may ask yourself what do I feed a newborn kitten or puppy.

Another quote: Management
Often an abandoned pup/kitten is unwell and will not survive whatever you do. The most important thing here is to warm the pup/kitten. Try to place it back with its mum but if she won't accept it warm it up by placing it against your own skin under your clothing. Once warm (this can take half an hour or more) try to feed it. You can warm the pup or kitten on a hot water bottle but it is easy to overheat them or warm them too fast.

:-) Good luck!

Sorry to say it does happen. Some animals like some humans are not good parents. When and if this ever happens you need to take over the mommy job or if you can find a dog that just recently had puppies she may take over raising the puppies..

Everyone , who has a female that may have puppies needs to know what to do ahead of time if this was to happen.

Bitches can abandon their puppies for a variety of reasons. Some just aren't good mothers, others seem to refuse to take care of a particular puppy although this is usually due to something wrong with the puppy. Certain conditions such as eclampsia can cause a ***** to abandon her pups too.

dogs aren't instant mothers. they have to learn sometimes. you need to keep sitting with her when its time for the babies to feed, and make sure that everything gets done. Do not leave it up to her at this time, she doesn't sound ready. Get her a whelping box, keep the puppies there, and bring her in to feed them every few hours. its may take the puppies a while to learn to latch on, and a little bit to eat a full meal. there is also the cleaning of them, moms usually lick the babies, which stimulates them to go to the bathroom. So you will need to get read up on puppies if she does not take to being a mom soon! If she refuses completely, you may want to supplement the puppies. but mothers milk is the best thing in the world.

I had one doggie new mother, leave a puppy here and there without cleaning them up. It was her first litter. She was alone at this very scary time in her li ttle life and she didn't know what to do. We made sure somebody/something was with her for her birthing after that and she didn't leave or lose even one more puppy. When I say something I refer to the father of the puppys. He was a very good nursemaid.

Yes. It happens with cats. The dog might be afraid or it's there first time having puppy's and they don't know what to do. Just like humans, when you have your first baby your confused. You go out and buy books to help. Sadly, for the dogs they can't buy books or read!

Not until they're old enough to take care of themselves, and need to learn to be independent. Mother dogs are smart and instinctive, they'll know when it's time, just try not to interfere too much with the animal world

Yes they can. I had to help a friend one time nurse a litter of pups because the Mother wouldn't. We found that she would if we laid her down I sat with her head in my lap petting and talking to her while the pups nursed.
