I just adopted a La-Chon (half bichon frise and have lhasa apso), and I am considering doggy day care while I'm at work instead of caging her. Is it a good idea? This is my first dog in 15 years and my first puppy in 27 years! I have kind of forgotten what to do!

Here she is: http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v204/glitterkittyy/Deliliah.jpg

Her name is Delilah, and she's nearly 3 months old.

Thanks for your help!

Ginbail,
Thanks for reminding me. My work has a doggy dare care and a child day care. I would get to stop by on my lunch and breaks. I also get a discount!! :o)

mcghankathy,
Thank you for all your advice! My SIL has a dorkie (part dachsund/yorkie), and she has volunteered to watch Delilah 2-3 days/week. The dogs act like best friends already!!

Thanks goldengal. They gave me all her shot records. She is still due one more parvo so I won't put her in day care until she has that last one. :o)

It's a good idea if you can afford it. Just check out the place and get references before you make any commitment.
Also, keep in mind that it's possible that your dog could bond more with people at daycare than to you.

Added: You're very lucky to have those daycares at your work. I wish I could take my dogs to work with me sometimes.

I think dog "day care" is a wonderful idea!! They get to play, run, romp and be a dog. Plus, if you're working some killer hours or get stuck at work, you won't have to guilt out about never having time to walk, play, etc.. I however would probably not do it 5 days a week. The pup should eventually learn how to be alone too. Maybe not now, cuz she is so young (and cute!!) but when a little older. They learn manners and good behaviors from the other dogs there too. Why not try it full time at first, and then, if all goes well, start to drop to "part Time?"I personally do not like crates. I tried one, once, and it lasted for about 10 minutes. I felt terrible. Luckily, my dogs all turned out to be ok home alone. I think it's because they have each other. So, being around other dogs can only help her learn. Thank you for adopting. You're gonna be a wonderful doggy parent!!! It's like riding a bike-it'll all come back to you. Best of luck!!!!! namaste'

My goodness she is so cute!
Doggie day care is a wonderful idea! Check around at different places and find one that fits your dogs needs. Some are just for smaller breeds like yours and some take any breed. All will want proof of vaccines. Go and visit and bring your dog with you.

Good luck!

It really is a great thing, puppies have alot of needs and energy. I use to take my Lab when he was a puppy and it was not only great for reducing his energy but also for socialization. He was alot happier than being caged up all day and it made house breaking a lot easier because puppies need to gor frequently and being in a cage hampers their training. I would do it again without hesitation.

It's an excellent idea! One of my fosters was adopted by a family who takes her to daycare. She has a wonderful time playing with the other dogs all day, and she has become wonderfully socialized. When she gets home, she has her supper and plops down, tired and happy.
