I have a bulging disk in my lower back that compresses the S1 nerve root. Does anyone have a recommendation of exercises to strengthen that area and not cause further damage? ~Thanks

Do your legs hurt as well? Take aspirin and a whirl poll bath should help.

I have had some lower back pain. Nothing as serious as a disk, but I use gentle yoga stretches to help relieve and strengthen. The cobra and cat poses may be good to start with. Go slow. If it hurts; Stop.
There are a lot of good books out there (also on the web) on this.
Good Luck

my husband just go back from a seminar. for any low back including disc problems do this periodically during the day to take away all pressure from your low back: arch your back. do this at your desk, driving etc. you will feel a difference.
and for those of you having back problems with a large abd. losing or trimming your abdomen will make a huge difference, in fact, this could be your problem. for those of you that do not know how to arch your back , it is simply leaning back , head/neck toward your buttocks. opposite of hunching your back.
