Not just doughnuts. It's a snack food thing because a lot of the police spend a large amount of time just sitting in the car doing nothing...

I am a 17yr veteran cop...in the city's,all night doughnut stands gave free coffee and doughnuts to patrol officers as a sort of free security...no one is going to rob a place where cops are likely to be found 24/7..or might drop in at any time...all night convience stores still do it.....also doughnuts are a low acid food that will not bother your stomach on a 12 hr all night shift like a greasy hamburger will come back to haunt you at 4am.....for the smart a*s (fitforli)that made the comment about just looking at cops....I ran down a 22 yr old 3 nights ago and I am 52...come by and we will see who is in shape..I dont eat chips or drink sodas of any type.....I find your question insulting to officers who work hard and dont play stupid games and dont sit on their fat as*es all day or night but do get out of the car to answer the 911 call from the lady whose abusive spouse is beating her head in,or the old lady that hears a rustle in her bushes at 4am.....tell you what, next time you need someones help, call the doughnut shop and ask for the countervan

This is a fad that is slowly growing out of fashion. The doughnut thing started when the only thing open, especially late at night, was a doughnut shop. Cops got hungry, and that's where they stopped. Most of the new, younger, cops, eat in a healthier manner. They are more aware of nutrition, then the older ones.

It is a stereotype that has been given because police generally need something with high energy and something that can be consumed on the go. Actually, police don't eat doughnuts any more than the average citizen does. I have been in emergency rooms and doctor's offices where they had three dozen doughnuts sitting on the counter for staff. I was at an insurance office where they were binging on doughnuts. Cops are also stereotyped as fat, lazy, and stupid even though we generally are in better shape than the general public and have to be using better than average brain power to solve cases, deal with domestics, and settle everyones problems with their neighbor that could have been solved with a little communication instead of a baseball or rocks. It's okay that society prefers to laugh when the bumbling cop idiot on tv lets the bad guy get away but when people are scared and in need of help, We will be there.

It's a movie stereotype however some of them do live off of a lays & doughnut diet, look at the policeman himself and you will tell what he eats in the van!!

It doesn't anymore. That is a myth that is no longer valid. Since our country was stolen from us, the police are now well trained and in shape. Mainly because they will be required to do massive amounts of crowd control as they herd citizens into the concentration camps for the New World Order.

I think it is a play off of the fact that they eat on the go a lot. While I am not a cop, I used to be a refrigeration contractor. I was on the road a lot, and I had a less than healthy diet of junk food and soda between jobs, and gas stations.

C'mon lets not make fun of them. I feel sorry for them. Alot of times they have to eat on the run, and that means quicky meals to go. Remember they are the ones running all over the place to save our lives and asses. I LOVE the cops, man and woman. If I am at restaurant and I have the opportunity to pay for their meal, I will!

Because it's the only Lay they can get and the donuts are good to sit on to offset the hemmorroids.
