If you have the original 98 disk no problem just reinstall but make sure to back up all your files to CD first because you are going to lose them.

Now a question???? Why are you still using either one, they are no longer supported by Microsoft, and most newer programs wont run on them.

I know its a pain in the rear but i strongly suggest that you get XP or Vista they are much easier to use, and don't have the problems that 98 does.

By the way upgrading when done properly should never be a problem, just dont try to rush the process and make sure the computer you have is capable of running the new OS, and you will be fine.

Yes.

Depends what disk filing system your win2k box is using... if it's NTFS you will not be able to read the disk with win98, so you will have to back up all *your* data, allow the win98 installer to reformat the disk, reinstall all your programs and oout your data back.

If your win2k box is using FAT then you can still get at the disk in win98 and read the data... so I'd suggest you go out and buy a new disk drive and install that in the PC as a master, install win98 on it, put the old disk in as the 'd' drive (slave on the bus it was on probably) and then you can read your old data off the disk. You'll still have to install the programs again though...

But why install an unsupported operating system in place of another unsupported operating system? Win98 is less robust than win2k generally... about the only thing it's better for is games. Why not jump to XP... buy some more memory... and you can upgrade to XP from win2k keeping all your applications and data without having to reinstall them.

If the computer came with the original 98 operating system the answer is yes. If it did not, then I strongly recommend finding out what operating system it uses and restore back to that.
You have to reformat and start all over.
The best advice anyone ever gave me was never try to upgrade an operating system, it never works out well. So, whatever the computer came with that is what it is.
