Hi, I have two cats from the same litter. One male and the other female. They are currently 1 year and two months old. Since we have had them, we have fed them with Iams indoor cat food through a Walmart feeder. (The ones that holds the food in the container and they can eat as much as they want.) The two cats are now fat. They don't get enough exercise and eat too much. At what age should I start limiting their food intake? How much food should I start giving them? What type of diet do they need?
Thanks,
Cat Owner.

First, nix the Iams. It's not good food. Go with a high quality all natural food. I reccommend Wellness, they have a formula called Super5 Mix Lite which has the lowest fat content of any commercial cat food (I know because I have 3 fat cats myself, and I did a lot of research to find this food.) It's hard to feed 2 cats separately, you may have to continue using the free feeder. You can try using 2 food bowls and measuring the amount reccommended on the food bag each day, but if it seems like one cat it eating more than the other, go back to free feeding.

If they're over 1 year and fat, they're old enough for a diet. Good luck!

I would start limiting their food now as they are over a year old. i feed my cat whos about the same age 3 or 4 times a day free feeding a packet or 1/3 of a tin a time and now and again she has chicken left over from lunch or some tuna. May i say it is important that cats have exercise, buy some little balls they an chase or after you've eaten a packet of crisps tuck it all in 1 corner to make a triangle and throw it mycat loves that.If you live in a flat take them for a walk (on a lead if your scared of them running away).

You are feeding them a good cat food. I have three cats, and leave their dry food out at all times...some experts say you should, some say you should limit it. When you read feeding instructions on the bags, or cans it usually says 2 cans per day per cat. I feed mine 1/2 can in the a.m. and 1/2/ can in the p.m. They are all at a good weight, even the older one who isn't as active. Give your cats plenty of toys...mine love those little furry mice that are about 87 cents each. They will run around with them, bat them around and play games with them for hours. Catnip is great for them, they seem to get more playful-try the cosmic catnip. Do you feed them canned food at all? If not, I would ask your vet if just feeding them dry food is ok. Maybe try switching formulas on the dry food. Many cat food companys have different formulas to fir your kitty's needs. Maybe try a formula for less active or overweight cats. Good luck

First of all, if you're an animal lover PLEASE boycott IAMS

SEE http://www.iamscruelty.com/

No more need to be said.

Ok, I have 2 cats, one is 10 y.o the other one is 3 y.o and what I do I just feed them once a day. They are lean and happy! They get fed every day at 8 am and during the course of the day I might give them a treat or 2 but they are used to eating like that. Start limiting their food intake little by little and they'll start getting used to it. Consult your vet to see how many pounds they need to lose....

And please, don't buy IAMS anymore or any of their products....

Thanks!

Switch to a weight control cat food. There are several on the market.

If they dont exercise then you couldencourage them by buying toys and making them run around so you can also spend time with your cats whilst they are losing weight.
