Hi, The Japanese type are much more foxy looking about the face than the American type, their heads look more like a Japanese Shiba Inu. You say she's not very big but how big is not very big? I've seen some relatively small Akitas mainly females. Also it may be your perception, my male long haired Akita puppy still seems small to me but at 11 months he stands 28 inches at the shoulder and weighs 90lbs so he isn't small at all really.

Try looking at websites and you'll see the difference. Danti's Akita may be a place to start, they have both types. If you check out the following page it puts both types together so you can see the difference for yourself http://www.dantiakitas.co.uk/difference.shtml#difference

If you're still not sure and you can send me a picture of her I'll be able to tell you what type she is.

Hope this helps.

Paula

Is she KC registered? If so she'll either be registered as an Akita (American type) or a Japanese Akita Inu (Japanese type). If she isn't registered & comes from novice breeders - she could be anything!

Akitas originate from Japan but it's not common to see a Japanese bred one in America. She could just be a runt, but she's also not done growing yet. Give her time.

Akita's are a Japanese breed. They are great dogs, but can be very protective. I think they were bred to be fighting dogs. Anyway they are very pretty dogs.

I presume by your question that its not a pedigree, or it would have said on the papers. Most likley to be a Runt, they ran out of favour when dog fighting was banned, and are now used for hunting, not really a family pet where kids are.
