We dream because our mind has gone through several situations that relate to our dreams. Also, we dream because we are under the deep stage of sleep (stage 3~4). This means that we are in the dream world, think of new (and possibly old as well) things and ideas.

There sometimes is a need to dream when we're asleep. When we dream, we experience situations. These situations may be predicting the future (ie. earthquake, sounds weird, but TRUE.) or going through a "simulated" stressful event in life. After dreaming, we usually learn something, like a lesson, as if that event really did happen in real life.

dreamign is a way for the mind to rid itself of the days trama. Dreaming is a way for the brain to rid itself of usless but sometimes important information. Sometimes dreams are the minds way of telling us there is a problem that needs fixing. People should be more aware of what the mind is telling them at night and by that, maybe learn some new insight to their lives better. Get a book on dreams interpretation....they will help you uinderstand more about the different types of dreams you have (there are 4 different types of dreams).

I don't think there is a need for dreams. I haven't dreamt in years. Perhaps it's like Maslow's hierarchy of needs. once basic bodily necessities are met, then it becomes more of a mind influence. Without the stimulus of stress, the mind needs something to challenge it or for the mind to work on, puzzle over, solve, interpret. etc...
