Well, there is really no way of telling which of you are correct. Only the cat could tell you what she wants. If she's doing fine while being alone for periods of time, and isn't destroying anything or seeming detached or just overall unhappy or being destructive, then your cat probably doesn't mind not having company and quite possibly is enjoying the free time.

Although, maybe you could invite your friend's cats over and see how your cat gets along with other animals in your house. I suppose it would be a trial and error sort of thing to understand your cats needs.

Good luck! I hope that helped! =)

I have a cat Apollo who was in the same boat. Myself and my boyfriend were rarely home during the day because of work and school. So what little time I could spend with my Apollo I did. I thought it might be a good idea for companionship sake to adopt another cat. I went to the adoption center and found the most lovable cat in there who was already 9 months old, seeing how Apollo was already 2. Well Apollo was upset at first when I brought Brutus home. He was constantly trying to monopolize my attention and got possessive when Brutus came around. It was hard for him because he had been the only cat for a long time. Well after a month of them fighting constantly at night and during the day, i think they formed some kind of truce because now they are like two peas in a pod. So your mom is right to be concerned because it might not be an easy adjustment for Maggie at first but in time, she would adjust to another cat. Good Luck

You are. There would naturally be some hissing and fighting when the new cat was introduced to the house, but I strongly suspect that Maggie Moo would like having company rather than being alone. I'd recommend bringing in a younger cat rather than one the same age or older so her dominance will be pretty well easily established and maintained. Pecking order is important.

I hate to tell you this but on issues like how many cats to have, Moms are always RIGHT even if they do not have the correct facts. It is possible to get an established cat to accept a smaller kitten or even another young cat if you do it carefully.
I think what your Mom is telling you is she doesn't need another complication in her life right now.
It sucks but remember when you get your own place you can have all the cats you want.

She will not like the new cat at first . It would take time for both of them to get use to each other .I had one cat that every time she went to sleep , my other cat would sneak up on her and bit her tail hard . You have to think about having two cats to take to the vet for shots , check ups , spaying ,extra litter boxes , fleas etc . Many people think "How much trouble can one more cat be ?" Alot ! I like just one so I can spoil her rotten.

Well both really, your mom is right because the cats will not get along at first but when they are together on weekends they will eventually get used to each other and get along keeping each other company, leaving you right in the long run.
Good luck- I hope you get the kitty

You could have another cat. But then, you want more cats. And more cats. And eventually you'll end up like the dude with ten cats. And sixty years from now, you'll be one of those crazy old cat ladies who loves her cats wayyyy too much.

Oh, and you might accidentally suffocate on cat hairs. But maybe not. =]
