It's fine to sleep on your back without a pillow. Think about the thousands and thousands of years that humans didn't have pillows... and for thousands of years Asians slept on their backs with only a thin wooden board for a pillow. Back safety people are going to tell you the ergonomic way to lay, but whatever... sleep the way your comfortable.

Actually no, it is bad for your back, though not as bad as sleeping on your stomach.
At night you have to keep you spin aligned so that you spine will be supported. For proper body mechanics you should have one pillow under your head, and one under you knees. This will help keep you spine aligned. If you sleep on your side, you should have a pillow under your head, and one between your knees. Never sleep on your stomach, it exaggerates the curve in the lower part of your spine putting unneeded pressure there.

It's fine. Many people sleep without pillows at all with no ill effects.

I think it's bad for your neck because it doesn't have any support.
