Border Patrol arrests of undocumented immigrants are down 30 percent compared with last fiscal year, the biggest drop since after the 2001 terrorist attacks.

Border Patrol officials say the deployment of 6,000 National Guard soldiers has made it harder to breach the southern border, so fewer people are trying. The guard is helping spot illegal crossings, erecting walls and barriers and freeing up more agents to go into the field.

The decline, however, may be only temporary as immigrant smugglers search out new routes, said Tomas Jimenez, a University of California-San Diego immigration expert. The sagging U.S. construction industry also may be drawing fewer undocumented workers, he said.

Agents made 304,071 apprehensions borderwide from Oct. 1 to March 1, compared with 433,446 in the same period the year before.

...arrests are down 13 percent in the Tucson sector, and 66 percent in the Yuma sector.

i think this is great. all we need to do is completely fence the border down and it would really slow the illegals and may even stop them from coming in illegally.

Yes it is helping, but its like plugging a hole in a dam.You get one hole filled up and the water just pushes more pressure on another area causing the water to rush thru a different hole. I don't think there are fewer attempted crossings as a whole, just fewer attempted crossings in certain areas. AZ is trying its best to stop the almost constant flow of illegal aliens into our state. It may not be succeeding, but it is causing the illegal aliens to rethink their point of entry.
There must be a concentrated sincere effort by our federal government to stop this tidal wave of illegal aliens into our state and our country. The lawlessness and deaths on the border of innocent people caught up with drug and human smugglers, must end. The life of one Border Patrol agent or National Guardsmen should not be lost because of the vile lawless acts of theses criminals.

Number one, I do not fault these individuals for wanting to come here for a better life. And let's face it, the American Government has made it VERY attractive for immigrants from all over the world to want to come here. For one thing, our immigration laws are a joke. Rarely, if ever, are they enforced. The catch and release policy is hardly something that's going to deter illegal immigrants from wanting to come here. Now here's where I see a future problem of major concern: Large corporations in this country continue to send thousands and thousands of American jobs overseas to cash in on the cheap, slave-labor offered in many third world countries. As these jobs are continuing to be exported by the tens of thousands, these positions not only dry up for the American citizen, they also dry up for the illegal immigrant as well. Now we're both out of work. Disagree if you like, but the U.S. Government can barely take care of its needy right now. Wait until they have an extra fifty-million or so individuals who require their assistance as well. It's not going to be a pretty picture. Once more though, let me reiterate my original statement: I DO NOT fault ANY of the people for wanting to come here for a better life. I just cannot imagine our current system holding together while trying support so many needy individuals - citizens or not.

I doubt it, most likely they are just not arresting as many people. The national guard is not doing any security, they will just stand and watch the illegals come accross.

I understand that the border patrol have been busy helping the guard and not able to patrol as much

It doesn't seem to have changed anything where I live.
And I think while Bush is still south of the border, we need to get that wall built.

I don't think so. The border is too long to be completely secured.
