The rock in the dome is being held by metal chains- so it seems. In actual fact the stone is suspended in mid air by Allah's command when it tried to follow Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) on his journey in Israk- Mikraj.
It was said that in the olden days some people died of shock looking at the incredible suspended rock. The Jews who later took control of Jerusalem tied it with a chain to prevent further tragedy and at the same time discredit the truth about the Prophet's journey.

In addition to above I think under the dome there is the rock which prophet Mohammad PBUH stood on at the Night Journey from Mecca to Jerusalem in his way to heavens.

The Dome of the Rock (Arabic: Ù
سجد Ùبة اÙصخرة, translit.: Masjid Qubbat As-Sakhrah, Hebrew: ××פת ×ס××¢, translit.: Kipat Hasela, Turkish: Kubbetüs Sahra) is an Islamic shrine in what Muslims call the Noble Sanctuary (al-Haram al-Qudsi al-Sharif, Arabic: اÙØرÙ
اÙÙدس٠اÙشرÙÙ) — which Jews and Christians call Har ha-Bayit (Hebrew: ×ר ×××ת) or the Temple Mount — it remains one of the best known landmarks of Jerusalem. It was built between 687 and 691 by the 9th Caliph, Abd al-Malik. For centuries, European travelers have called it the Mosque of Umar.[

Yes. It's exactly that: a rock. However, religions add sentimental and spiritual value to it to the extent that people kill each other in order to gain control over the rock. How very interesting.
