If your talking about American robins yes both male and female have the red breast, the breast plumage is often almost identical, some females can have a more lightly colored breast and the feathers can sometimes look like they have a pale edge. To tell males and females apart look at their head, whereas males have a very dark/ black head http://content.ornith.cornell.edu/UEWebApp/images/JRW_072302_00469Z_L.jpg the females have a brownish head http://content.ornith.cornell.edu/UEWebApp/images/MPR_082102_100056_L.jpg . Note there are quite a few subspecies of robins, females of some sub-species can have heads that are as dark as males of other sub-species which can complicate things a bit.

Are you asking about European Robins or American Robins? European Robins both look the same, as far as I can determine. I have been birding in Europe a few times, but am not as familar with the birds there. In North America, our robin is actually a species of thrush. The females do have the russet colored breast, but its a bit paler.

Robin male and female adults are identical, but the spotty brown juveniles only slowly put on the red breast. Until about November males and females have separate winter territories, and you will normally only ever seen one bird at a time. The autumn song is rather wistful but from December on it sings more loudly, proclaiming its breeding territory.

The male robin's most striking feature is his red/orange breast and belly. They have gray-brown back and tail feathers with a slightly darker head. Their white throat is streaked with black and their undertail coverts are white.

They have brown legs and a thin yellow bill that they use for pecking worms and insects out of the ground.

Description - female: The female robin's coloring is quite similar to the male, but everything is a slightly paler color.

Description - young: The young robins also look similar, but have a heavily spotted breast.

Hope this helps
Good luck

Yes, the female robins red chest is a little more washed out looking or more of an earthy tone. This is so the female is camouflaged better against predators.

Yes, unlike many other birds, the female robin wears the same distinctive colours as the male, although still less vivid.

Yes and this is why sometimes the males get confused about when they are in with a chance of getting laid! They chase females away as they are very territorial, but eventually realise the females are not displaying the same aggressive tendencies, and then the penny drops...
