To be very frank I think it's time we leave well enough alone.
Just how many breeds of cats do we need?
Don't get me wrong, I love cats I have all my life.
We have four cats right now, all were rescued...I have nothing against purebred cats...but I feel there's no way I'm going to pay someone hundreds or even thousands of dollars for a designer cat when I can walk down almost any street in this country and see stray and feral cats that some idiot has dumped because they aren't kittens any more, straving to death.
Those are the cats I'll go for everytime, I'd rather save a life than line someones pockets.

Well I am no cat lover and have never heard of the things until now.. but to answer your question NO.. they are not a mutant cat and No I cant see that there is anything wrong with it (assuming that they are not closely inbreeding the animals).
This link -to a site that I reviewed, will explain more about them [ http://www.toygers.com/about.html ]. It appears that they are selecting and breeding the cats for personality characteristics that make them suitable to the restrictive indoor environments of modern living as well as for coat markings similar to that of tigers (hence the name toy {sized} tigers= toygers).
It appears that the breeding programme has been going on for decades with the first recognition as a breed being the early 1990's (developing breed).
I am usually pretty peeved at any one inbreeding animals or breeding for undesirable characteristics such as agression etc but at face value I cant see anything about the Toygers that would peeve me , and if anything I find the fact that they are using modern computer programmes to analyse the animals coat patterns to assist in selcting the most desirable ones to breed from - quite fascinating!

What a beautiful breed of cat! They are not mutant. As with any breed, people are always looking for new types and combos of breeding. They're just trying to make their puurfect cat.
We were just looking at buying one the other day. They are so great with families and have the majestic look of a tiger. You will expect to pay a pretty price for one. Besides the cost of them, when you are looking into buying one, make sure it's a reputable breeder. When they have "bad kittens" in the litter, they fix them so they cannot breed and ruin the good genes they are trying to get out of this breed.
Not only are they good house pets, they also live quite a long time.
I would so recommend this cat to anyone. Can't wait to get mine.

I am not sure breeding a Toyger is much different than breeding any other "designer" cat. Unlike the Bengal cat, the Toyger does not have any wildcat genes. While all my cats are non-pedigreed rescued cats, I do not have any particular problems with people who prefer cats bred for certain characteristics.

It's not a mutant cat. It's a soon to be recognized breed and were developed just like any other breed were developed.
