Bad Points

Really poor braking!! Especially in the wet!! Back end can swing out if not too careful on dry and especially wet.

My brother bought the Ford Puma 1.7 in black about 6 years ago and then passed it on to me last august! Stunning car I must admit, and I think it looks best in black! I must say to people who wish to buy one, try not to modify it too much because it takes all the joy out from the car. The ECU on my puma has been remapped which I don't really advise because it drinks petrol!!

I think Ford shouldn't have put a limiter on the 1st gear as it doesn't really pull too well but wow, is the 2nd gear good! Almost instant pull after about 3500 rpm all the way to 6750 rpm. Now the books say it does 0-60 mph at around 8.6 to around 9.3 which I have seen. I personally think that is rubbish. Without the modifications done to my car, I've done it in around 7.9, and with the modifications, around 7.4!

As for the handling, it's great fun! Corners well and can grip. if not being pushed too hard!! The fun factor of the back end swinging out on track days is amazing but on the road is very dangerous! Chasis well built for the car. 1.7 is good enough.

Now comfort is a bit of a pain. I'm 6ft 2 and trust me, if you plan on having a 4 person trip, take the bus! The Ford Puma is a 2person car. Really it is. 4 people can fit comfortably if you're very small and compact!

However, if most of your driving is done alone, then it shouldn't really be a problem.!! Only wish it had decent cup holders in the car!! It's SHOCKING!!

Cost of ownership is OK. Insurance is not too bad and servicing is very reasonable! But I must say, change the oil and plugs regularly if you wish to keep it forever, because that helps.

Sad to say that I will not be keeping the Puma for too long now as I wish to sell it and move on. But if you are thinking of buying a Puma, don't get the 1.4 or the 1.6! Buy the 1.7! There is a big difference between the 1.6 and 1.7. Its a good fun car!!

Good Points

Superb handling, can take corners where my other cars couldn't handle it.
Excellent acceleration throughout the rev range. (thanks to the VCT!)
Looks a lovely number from the front.
Bad Points

Probably the way I drive, but can be heavy on front tyres, brakes and discs.
Back end isn't as nice as the front and this is the view that most GTi's And VTRs will get of you!!! :-D

Excellent MPG for such a sporty little number. My Focus 1.6 Zetec could do 340 miles on a tank and cost about £45 to fill up (80p a litre at the time), my Puma can do 260 miles on a tank and costs £35 to fill up (97p a litre), when you work it out it's very economical. Ford parts are cheap as it's based on a Fiesta (by no means let that point put you off).

Good Points

Handling has to be its strongest point and performance comes a close second.
Bad Points

Only bad thing about it is its brakes which could have been discs all round.

That's my car above and after owning her over 4 1/2 years now from new I can say she has never lost a beat.
Superb car and a future classic, I won't be letting her go for quite some time to come.

neither, for gas mileage get a toyota Prius, if you are looking for cheap, get a Hyundi or Dodge Neon they all suck equally except-the latter two have a better warranty. For 4WD you can't beat the Liberty-drives like a car but can go off road.
