begin getting the puppy used to a collar first. once he is used to the collar, attach the leash and simply let him walk in the house with the leash on to get used to the feeling of the weight. then pick up the leash and hold it in your hand. this will allow your pup to get used to the new feeling and weight with no stress. always supervise so the leash doesn't get tangled around the pup or on any furniture and cause strangling or injury. when you take the pup outside, put him on the leash and allow him to lead the way at first with gentle resistance from you. if he pulls hard or jumps at the end of the leash, stop immediately and grab him gently, tell him no and put him in a sit. if he continues pulling, gently tug back on the leash and tell him no, put him in a sit and begin again. use key words with him- heel when you hold the leash short and keep him at your side, no when he pulls or jumps. use praise a lot and physically reward him with petting when he performs like he should. never hit and use verbal punishment (bad dog, etc) very sparingly.

on my own dogs, i much prefer a harness instead of a collar for leash training and walking. i have bred and trained dobies, rotties and shepherds and use the "no pull" harnesses. these will tighten around the dogs shoulders and chest when he pulls or tries to walk faster than you pace him and will make the dog slow down or stop without the pressure around the throat of a regular collar. i do not like "choke" collars and i abhor the metal link training collars that stab when they tighten.

good luck, and enjoy the pup!

I have the same problem only my pup is 4 weeks old. Visit a couple of dog training websites. Also the thing that helped me the most is keeping the leash on him while you are playing in the house, when he is just walking around, and when he is eating hold the leash and his food bowl and make him follow you with the bowl in hand around the kitchen. He will not care if the leash is on him b/c there is food and that is all he is thinking about. It would be best if you had a fenced back yard until he gets used to wearing the leash in the house take it off of him when you go outside. He will chew on the leash since it is something he does not like attached to him but that will soon pass. I hope that some of this helped. Good Luck

Ive found that the best way to lease train is to put the leash on and give the dog something it likes to walk toward like Chase a ball food etc. the best way that worked for me was having it follow another dog while on the leash.

Get him used to the collar first. Put the collar on when the puppy is being fed, to associate it with good things. Then attach a leash and let the puppy drag it around. practice putting a small amount of tension on the leash (never Jerk it) then releasing when the puppy is calm.

When starting out walking, make kissy noises, slap your legs, anything to get puppy to follow you on his own. Don't ever drag him, he'll start to have negative feelings about the leash.
Lure him forward with a yummy treat.

By the time he is ready to go walking outside, (after he's had all of his shots) he'll be used to it.

Enroll him in a properly run Puppy Kindergarten now, they can help.

you can start training your pup, start with simple, short instructions, like sit, heel, down etc etc, it is still a puppy, so keep your lesson short, not more than 5 minutes, make the training fun, break up the training session into 5-6 times a day, always have the training at the same time ofthe day, remember that your puppy has very short attention span. work on 1 or 2 (same)command every day for 2-3 weeks or untill he has master the command before you teach him the next command, you need to have lots, LOTS of patience,
