The full version of Vista (like all Windows installs) has two options. You can format the drive which would wipe everything. Or you can leave the drive as it is, which installs Vista without wiping programs or data.

You can also purchase an "upgrade only" version of Vista for a little less. It will install on PCs that already have XP without wiping anything. But will not do install on a blank hard drive. That can be an issue if you have to replace your hard drive should it die, or decide to go to a larger drive. You would have to install XP and then upgrade to Vista.

Unless there is a specific reason you need Vista, I would recommend waiting a few months until they release the first service pack before updating. Give Mr Gates a chance to get some of the bugs out of the system.

Windows vista is still not 100% completed. wait for half a year until the drivers are ready and upgrade you OS. Yes you will lose some of the programs but not all of them. It's a risky operation right now so wait for a while and then you can safely upgrade your OS-don't forget to byu a new graphic card and enough RAM memory(at least 1.5gb)
