He has lost weight, is very cranky, walks into walls and has begun, most troubling, to urinate on my carpet downstairs in one general area, although his litter box is only a few feet away. Do I put him down? My house smells awful.

Would you be putting him down because it's more convenient or because his quality of life is low? You need to answer that for yourself.....Take him to the vet for an evaluation 1st.
My 17 year old is fine, a bit thinner but happy. (Although he has peed in a couple of strange places lately. An empty laundry basket and on a bag of potting soil).
Vinegar works well to eliminate the smell as does stuff they sell at the pet store.

The first thing you should do is take him to the Vet.
Losing weight, walking into walls going outside the box are all signs of illness.
Please don't put him down until the Vet has checked him over and can tell you what the problem is.

Good luck, I hope your Vet has good news for you.

While the decision to put your companion cat down is never an easy one, you have to consider his quality of life. Walking into things and losing weight seem to indicate illness of some type. Rather than see an animal suffer, I would opt to have him put down.

Seventeen is "elderly" for a cat. Like humans, some cats are still very active at that age (I have an 18 year old who is more active than my nine year old). Others in their late teens are definitely showing their age. I think you have to consider what life is like for him.

I am sorry for you and your companion. I wish you well.

We had a cat that was that age also. She was losing weight and urinating out of box. Vet said she probably was diabetic and that lead to kidney disease. Seeing that he is walking into walls he might be going blind. Please take him to a vet, he might be suffering, kidney disease is fatal and once they show symptoms it is to late. I hate to say it but it is not kind to the animal to let it suffer, no matter how much you love it.

I assume it is just because he is very old as far as cat age goes. Poor little guy. I am sorry about your cat and your carpet.

Sounds like he needs to be seen by his vet and properly diagnosed and treated. Good Luck.
