You can make a fuss never take the first offer.Insurance companies would rather write, an older car off, than have it repaired,it makes their life easier. If it has only light damage ie classed as a cat d.Take the money get the car legal ie to mot standards then use it.Some times you need to re mot to re insure. If its scrap either tell them to take it away,or sell the salvage to a jap breaker(back pages of auto trader) you can get £50/100 for it subject to what parts are still OK.

Are you sure on the mileage? Seems very low for a vehicle 10 years old. That would be less than 300 miles a month if accurate.
As to worth, it would depend on the extent of damage and the overall condition of the vehicle before the accident. Obviously the insurance felt it more economical for them to give you the worth rather than pay for repairs. I'm surprised they allowed you to keep it, usually when they total a vehicle they will take it to a salvage yard to recoup their losses by selling parts off of it.
But what they would owe you would be the worth of the vehicle, adjusted for condition, at the time of loss.

the insurence will only pay markrt value of the car usu aly what you would get part exchange if you still have the damaged car I would ask the insurance co whether they are going to colect it if not then sel off all the good pieces and scrap the rest
Make sure of the price of replacment for that year so you have a good idea to its worth

A '97 R reg with the expected mileage of 90,000 is worth about £635 - £685, so I would guess what they've offered you is about fair. I'm surprised they left the car with you though, if they've written it off & paid you out it's theirs to get rid of. Tell 'em to come and collect their property, you don't want to pay to scrap what is theirs!

Your insurance company will ALWAYS try to underpay you, its their job. If they have asked you to dispose of it, tell them it will cost £ ?? and ask them for that too.
