Use a bark collar they work well to control nuisance barking. A spray bottle may work but the only problem with those are you have to actually be there when the dog is barking. All of the other solutions given ONLY work if you are with the dog while he is barking because you can not correct after the fact and the dog will not usually continuously bark if the owner is present . You can NOT correct if you are not there but a bark collar makes the correction for you with out your having to be there and while the barking is going on.

There are devices out that will stop excessive barking. If you aren't up for that, you may want to get books or videos on dog training. Or, get the advice of a dog trainer. I am not sure what breed of dog you have but some tend to bark more than others for no reason. Also, investing in some chew toys that are appropriate for your dogs size will help. Sometimes dogs get bored and have nothing else to do but bark for attention. The main thing is not to let the dog see you get irritated and don't yell or hit the dog. This will only encourage their barking to gain your attention. A trick that I found works is putting the dog on a leash. When it starts to bark for no reason, give the leash a tug and a firm command. This will distract the dog from what it is doing and hopefully get it to stop. You have to be consistent with whatever method you try and enlist the help of other people in the home to do the same. Good luck!

First, it may be the breed. My Bernese Mt Dog seldom barks, no berners do. A Chi will bark all the time. Yorkies can go either way depending on how they are brought up.

Second, get a soda can and drop a few pennies in the bottom. When the dog barks, shake the can loudly. The dog will stop barking. Give the dog a treat. This will encourages the dog to stop, also pull their attention from whatever is making them bark.

Use positive training methods to train your dog not to continuously bark. This will be easier when you establish the cause of the barking. Alternatively, contact a behaviourist or a professional dog trainer. The Association of Pet Dog Trainers for instance will only use positive methods to train your dog.

Despite some of the answers you have already received, it is important that when training your dog, you do not use highly aversive training devices, as ultimately they do not address underlying behavioural problems making them cruel and unnecessary. An example of such a device is an electric shock collar. Electric shock collars train a dog to respond out of fear of further punishment, having received an electric shock when it does not perform what is asked of it, rather than from a natural willingness to obey. They also cause further behavioural problems. To illustrate, as a dog will have no idea what caused the pain, it is far more likely to associate it with something in its immediate environment than with its behaviour at that time. This is why cases of dogs attacking other dogs, their owner or another animal close by at the time of the shock are quite common, as is the dog developing ‘superstitious’ fears to things in the environment (such as birds, wind and grass) that were heard or seen at the time of the shock.

It's better if you don't hit the dog directly with your hand or a rolled up newspaper. The problem with this method is that it may retaliate later by biting anyone that raises a hand up to it.

This could ultimately end up in a euthanized dog and a hefty lawsuit should the bite become serious.

A better idea would be to hit the newspaper with your hand right in front of the dog's face. This will produce the desired result of getting the dog to alter his behavior without the unwanted effect of having it be terrorized anytime someone comes up to pet it.

Another effective device is to have a spray bottle handy and spray the dog with water anytime it's behavior proves unruly.
Dogs hate this and the spray is quite harmless.

A third method would be to buy a muzzle for the dog and put it on the dog anytime it gets out of control. Effective.

I heard of somebody that could not train their dog to stop barking. One day someone told them to hit the smoke alarm button everytime it barks. They tried it and it worked. Now all they have to do is SAY the word smoke alarm, and the dog stops.

You can go to a pet store and buy a collar that gives them a little shock when they bark. It may take a few days but your dog will learn that it hurts when he barks and he will stop.
