I would say that yes it is true. That is a side of America that the powers that be try to pretend does not exist. Take a drive thru Appalachia if you want to see poverty. Go thru the mining towns and other areas of Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky. America wants to reach out and cure the world when we have major problems in our own country. Example is the scandal of the military hospitals. We ship 363 tons of cash to Iraq that nobody seems to be accountable for but we let soldiers lie in places like Walter Reed's squalor in the outpatient quarters. America needs to heal America first then worry about the rest of the world. Bush is the worst thing that could have happened to this country. Under his watch, our military has been gutted and overextended. He has forgotten that the purpose of the US Military is to protect the USA. We cannot shove our brand of democracy down the throats of other countries if they are unwilling to have it. We need to get our troops back home. Billions have been spent on this wasted effort in Iraq. The most precious resource, the lives of our troops have been sacrificed. Others have been maimed for life with injuries that will alter their whole life. The cost we have paid is too great. American politicians need to come home and take a good long look at the state of things here and fix here before we go alter the world for others. Charity begins at home.

To your original question-No, that sounds like a ridiculous exaggeration to me. Whatever the number is, to live in "poverty" in ouir country usually means you have: A TV, a car, a domicile, and a phone. On top of that you have access to food stamps and other public assistance. Your 2nd statement is another whole can of worms........
