I always assumed "gay" meant homosexual, but it's always written as "gay and lesbian." So lesbians aren't considered gay? I don't get it.

Yes and no.

The word "gay" is sometimes used to refer generically to all homosexuals, such as the "gay community". But when referring to an individual, "gay" is a male homosexual and "lesbian" is a female homosexual. Some women like to use the term "gay" for themselves (to each their own), though I've never seen a gay man refer to himself as lesbian.

BTW... Lesbian is pronounced "less-be-an" not "lez-be-an". In English, anyway.

No, Donald. The term "gay" is used to describe both; however, the term "gay" for the past few years has been used more to imply homosexual men than homosexual women.

The reason why lesbians are being excluded from the term "gay" is because of the acceptance that lesbianism have had in today's society.

When homosexuality was in the closet people were called gay regardless of gender. Now that times have changed, gay women prefer to be called lesbian and not gay women.

Depends on the person. Some women only want to be called lesbian, and some like to be called gay. Some prefer dyke, but they usually have martyrdom issues, in my opinion. Good luck trying to find a name we can all agree on.

I describe myself as gay. I don't especially like the hard Z sound in the middle of lesbian.

Oh Gregory, thank you for correcting me - on your informed advice I shall advise all my female gay friends to change what we call ourselves.
