As a teacher, I absolutely think we should be paid more. Although my scheduled day is 7 hours long, I typically am at work 10 or more hours a day and I know very few teachers who are there any less than that. It would be nice to have a 9-5 job, but there are so many requirements put on teachers that it is impossible. Don't get me wrong, I do love teaching and couldn't imagine doing anything else but it would be nice to be compensated for the work we do.

My mum is a teacher, and I am going into teaching. I have first hand experiance that teachers get paid so little! Everyone says "Oh, well they get paid well and have holidays and summers off". True. But they also go into the school at 7 am, leave at 430 pm, then spend at least an hour each night marking, creating lesson plans, or getting stuff ready for lessons the next day. In elementary school, three times a year for about three weeks at a time they are super stressed and spend at least 4-5 hours a night trying to finish report cards. You have 30 students, and each needs at least 3 hours to finish.
After all of that (if it isn't enough), teachers can be involved in extracurricular activities, after school meetings, PD days, professional classes, etc. And just to mention, classes taken to further learning come out of the TEACHER'S pocket, NOT the school's. As for classroom supplies, I think every teacher in this world spends at LEAST $100/year, if not more on classroom supplies, simply because the budget for the classroom is so horrible.
In the end, the money sucks, but you know that most of the people who are teaching must be doing it because they like it... who else would do that for $35,000 a year to start?

teachers can shape a society-- they can make or break it by the way they teach children values, good or bad. teachers aren't only "instructors"-- they are "masters" of their field, as they cannot teach what they don't have.
the best scientists were once students. the best surgeons were once students. there is no one so successful today that was never a student-- we all once were under the tutelage of a teacher.
if we say that the future of the country is in the hands of our youth of today, who do you think leads the pack? it is, and always will be, the teachers who mold these children into future leaders.
teachers can make a good president out of you. or they can make you so bad by bad examples. that's why we need good teachers. and the only way to attract the best people of a community into the teaching profession is by giving them just compensation for their awesome work--
are they underpaid, you ask? absolutely. how much? grossly.

Thank you! It's good to see the work and role of teachers recognized.
Where I live, teachers' salaries are really quite fair. What does require some attention is working conditions (as well as learning conditions for students).
Teachers need to be protected from abusive treatment by students and parents. Even in the nicest schools, teachers are yelled at and insulted by students and parents.
Schools need to be better maintained. Cleanliness, air quality, conditions of the buildings including windows and roofs all need attention. Look at Oprah's leadership academy in South Africa! She recognizes the importance of a beautiful, enriching environment in achievement.
Yes, it would be nice to give teachers more money. However, wouldn't be nice to do something that makes things better for them and for their students too?

I have been a teacher most of my professional life, on several levels, from grade 1 to post graduate students. I've worked in several institutions in several geographic locations and I have been in contact with teachers all over the world.
I haven't found any geographic location where good teachers are overpaid. I have found in most places good teachers are underpaid, usually grossly underpaid.
If you can read this, it is thanks to a teacher. If you can understand this, it is thanks to several teachers.

1. GET RID OF UNIONS AND LOBBYISTS
2. TEACHERS SHOULD BE INDEPENDENT CONTRACTORS WHO HAVE TO BID AND MAKE PROPOSALS FOR WORK. ONLY THEN WILL SCHOOLS HAVE QUALIFIED TEACHERS WHO REALLY CARE ABOUT THEIR CRAFT AND ARE COMPENSATED ACCORDINGLY.
3. THE PUBLIC PICKS THE SCHOOL THEIR CHILD ATTENDS.
4. GET THE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OUT OF EDUCATION
THINK ABOUT THIS: A COMPANY NAMED ABC, INC.WANTS TO CONSTRUCT A NEW BUILDING. THEY PUBLICIZE THEIR INTENTIONS AND SEEK BIDS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF SAID BUILDING FROM A RELIABLE CONTRACTOR.
THESE PROPOSALS ARE RECEIVED IN A TIMELY MANNER AND REVIEWED BY ABC, INC. THE COMPANY THEN INTERVIEWS EACH PROSPECTIVE CONTRACTOR ASKING QUESTIONS ABOUT HIS/HER QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE, AND REFERENCES.
BECAUSE ABC, INC. IS INVESTING MILLIONS OF DOLLARS IN THIS BUILDING, A VERY THOROUGH CHECK IS DONE ON EACH APPLICANT INCLUDING A CRIMINAL CHECK AND SPEAKING TO REFERENCES.
WHEN ABC, INC. HAS DECIDED WHICH CONTRACTOR WILL BEST SUIT THEIR NEEDS, NEGOTIATIONS OCCUR AND A CONTRACT IS SIGNED STATING WHAT IS EXPECTED FROM BOTH PARTIES. IF EITHER PARTY CAN NOT OR DOES NOT PERFORM ACCORDING TO THIS CONTRACT THE AGREEMENT IS NULL AND VOID.
IF SCHOOL SYSTEMS FOLLOWED THESE SAME PROCEDURES, TEACHERS WOULD BE PAID WHAT THEY ARE TRULY WORTH A N D OUR CHILDREN WOULD HAVE THE BEST OF THE BEST TEACHERS.

Yes, I do. But I don't think that while our taxes pay for them that many people would actually follow through with it.
